Itinerary
Day 1, Sat. ARRIVE ADELAIDE
On arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel of choice.
Day 2 , Sun. ADELAIDE / KANGAROO ISLAND
Fly to Kangaroo Island and meet your local guide. Start the day at Seal Bay, where you can walk along the beach among the Australian sea lions. Enjoy a picnic lunch at a secluded bush setting. Then, on a bushwalk, look for the rare Kangaroo Island Glossy Black Cockatoo and other species of birds that make their homes here. (L)
Day 3, Mon. KANGAROO ISLAND / ADELAIDE
Enjoy some free time before you transfer to the airport for a mid-morning flight back to Adelaide. On arrival, you will be taken on an afternoon tour. See the city’s diverse neighborhoods and the central market. Visit either a Jam Factory (arts and crafts) or Tandanya (aboriginal cultural center). Your evening is free.
Day 4, Tue. ADELAIDE / COOBER PEDY
Around mid-morning, fly to Coober Pedy and transfer to the renowned Desert Cave Hotel. This afternoon enjoy a mining tour and learn about opals and how they are mined. For stargazers, there’s an optional evening trip out into the desert for a look at the sparkling evening sky.
Day 5, Wed. COOBER PEDY / THE GHAN
Today, explore this unusual town on your own. There are plenty of things to do, including an optional outing to join the mail run to Oodnadatta and William Creek, two isolated Outback villages. Very late this evening, head to the train station to board the Ghan train. Settle into your stateroom and get a good night’s sleep.
Day 6, Thu. THE GHAN / ALICE SPRINGS
Sit back and relax as your journey unfolds. Enjoy fine dining (meals are included for Gold Kangaroo service), learn about the flora and fauna, and absorb the Outback scenery. Arrive in Alice Springs later this morning, with the rest of the day free.
Day 7, Fri. ALICE SPRINGS.
Enjoy a free morning. Your afternoon tour includes the Telegraph Station, School of the Air and Royal Doctor Service.
Day 8, Sat. ALICE SPRINGS / AYERS ROCK
Visit a camel farm on your way to Ayers Rock. Then, join a guided walk along a creek bed deep into the Olga Gorge. Tonight, sip a glass of wine while watching the colors change as the sun sets over Ayers Rock.
Day 9, Sun. DEPART AYERS ROCK
A tour of the base of the Rock shows you its caves and Aboriginal rock paintings. Later this morning, transfer to the airport.
